The character in the book turns to drugs and alcohol to
mask the pain of a sexual assault. Have you ever been sexually
assaulted? I must ask because readers may assume this is
based on an actual event.
I'm glad that you asked
that question. Due to the fact that I write in first
person a lot of people may assume that I am basing things
that I write on first hand experiences. No, I have not ever
been sexually assaulted.
The inspiration for the sexual assault storyline came from
the fact that many women go to the club and they will drink
or come to the club under the influence of drugs and they
may find themselves going home with guys who put them in
situations that may lead to sexual assault.
When you are drinking or using drugs, your common sense
and good judgement may become skewed. Readers will read
this storyline in the book and they can use their own judgement
to determine if substance abuse played a role in the assault.
What made you write about developing a friendship with an
adult film star? I mean most people don't think about forming
lasting friendships with people in that industry?
Adult film stars are people too. I think people should realize
that. I have friends who work in the industry and they are
real people. Just because you work in the adult film industry
that doesn't mean that you are constantly looking for sex
or trying to approach your male or female friends for sex.
They are regular people. I developed the friendship between
Shaylene and Candy Layne to prove that women can be friends
with other women in the adult film industry without sex
being the driving force between their friendship. Friends
can just be friends sometimes.
The main character develops a
problem with drugs and alcohol? Have you ever experienced
a problem with drugs or alcohol?
No, I don't drink. I haven't had a drink in 10 years.
I'm not trying to overcome an alcohol problem. I only drank
2 or 3 times in my whole life. When I did drink, I felt
like I drank too much. I had a lot of fun drinking. I thought
to myself, if drinking in large quantities is something
I enjoy, maybe I shouldn't do it. I didn't want to become
overly dependent on alcohol to have a good time with my
friends. I have never used any drugs and I have never even
smoked a cigarette.
The main character experiences an HIV scare. Have you ever
been tested and do you feel that sexually active you people
should be tested? If so how often should they be tested?
Yes, I have been tested. I think I've been tested 3
or 4 times. It's always real fun getting tested. There is
a lot of outreach out there spreading the word about getting
tested. When they have these events its a good time to meet
other young people concerned about their health and well
being. of course, the test was negative every time. So no,
I'm not HIV positive for the record.
When I was writing this book, people told me that if I wrote
a book about a woman facing an HIV scare people would think
that I was HIV positive. That's just stupid. In American
society, we have the freedom to write about anything we
want to. I am determined to not let what other people might
think about a storyline come in the way of my author career.
So for the record, no I'm not HIV positive, I don't have
AIDS and I don't have any friends with the AIDS or HIV virus.
I don't want anyone to read this book and think I'm talking
about myself or anyone in my life.
Do you think a woman can be friends
with the other woman if her man cheats on her?
Not really. Shaylene was kind of fake and phony by being
friends with the other woman. A woman might try to be friends
with the other woman, but if she is still in a relationship
with the man it will only create conflict.
This book is so exciting. I'm sure readers will wonder what
happens next with Shaylene Pratt? Do you have any plans
for a sequel?
I'm
sure readers will find themselves attached to Shaylene Pratt.
I don't currently have any plans for a sequel.
What are you working on now?
I really enjoy writing fiction novels. I plan to release
a young adult fiction book and another fiction title within
the next few years.
